Drape is a new sculpture series by award winning artist Ted VanCleave.

**About the Drape Sculpture Series:** Gravity is the relentless force behind the Drape sculpture series. Draping is the act of applying a layer of clay to an object to allow gravity to pull the soft clay towards earth, pulling the clay into the folds and crevices of familiar everyday objects like phones, cameras and keyboards. "I can’t really control the clay; I just influence it," states VanCleave, "and that's what really makes it exciting for me. Every new outcome, every new sculpture is an adventure into the unknown."

**Artist Statement:** I love how clay drapes unpredictably over everyday objects. Sensuous folds develop as the clay drapes over the sides and is pushed around by the shape of the draped object. The semi-soft medium envelopes the ready-made objects and slowly settles into the voids, creating an outline that requires study to understand its origin. The familiar and mundane become interesting. Objects that we rarely give a second glance become draped in mystery. With study, the form beneath the drape slowly reveals itself as details emerge and hidden crevices show signs of life. Drape is a nod to Duchamp’s ready-mades but with added visual obscurity and interesting sculptural shapes created by draping the objects within. Once the item is draped, it’s permanently entombed and preserved for future generations. Drape. Artifacts of our culture.
